EWASO ECLAVE CONSERVANCY

Ewaso Enclave Conservancy (https://www.ewasoenclave-conservancy.org) was established to protect over 2,000 acres of vital wildlife habitat in Laikipia County, Kenya. Nestled along the Ewaso Nyiro River, the Conservancy addresses critical threats such as habitat fragmentation and land-use changes that endanger essential wildlife corridors. Since its inception, EEC has significantly enhanced habitat quality through vegetation regeneration and the integration of modern conservation practices. By securing key dispersal routes and strengthening ecological connectivity, the Conservancy plays a crucial role in safeguarding biodiversity while supporting the well-being and values of local communities.

In 2025, we began a collaboration with this emerging nature reserve Ewaso Enclave Conservancy the only conservancy in Laikipia that is owned and managed by a Samburu family.

After Kenya’s independence, the Lekorere family acquired the land from a former British ranch owner. It was later subdivided among the family’s sons. Years later, Jacob Lekorere took the visionary step of transforming his portion into a protected conservancy, dedicated to preserving Laikipia’s unique natural heritage. Today, the Conservancy is fully registered, and active restoration efforts are underway. Situated in a region renowned for sightings of the elusive black leopard, it lies in the heart of Laikipia’s wild landscape.

Our mission is to assist and support EEC in excelling at wildlife conservation while promoting a deeper understanding of nature, biodiversity, and community well-being. Our joint efforts aim to maintain sustainable wildlife populations, enhance genetic diversity, and advance conservation education. By grounding our approach in science and fostering community engagement, we are working together to protect wildlife and nurture a harmonious relationship between people and nature now and for generations to come.

We will also establish a small, secluded camp at the Conservancy, offering an experience far removed from the usual tourist routes. Additionally, we will assist with reforestation efforts and help establish essential infrastructure on the ground.
